Abstract
Construction industry is resources oriented. Out of these resources is the human resources which coordinate other resources. Effective management of human resources in construction firms accounts for increase in performance in terms of cost time and quality. This paper examines human resources management practices in the construction firms in Oke-Ogun area, Oyo State with the specific objectives to identify the factors affecting resources management practices and assess the effects of human resources management practices on performance of construction firms with the view to improve the organizational attitude to improve human resources management towards time, cost and quality performance of the construction firms. The paper explored survey research using structured questionnaire. The population for the study is the construction firms in the study area. The managers were the respondents (site and project managers). 50 questionnaires were distributed but 35 were duly filled and returned. The data collected data was analysed using mean and ranking and regression analysis for factors affecting human resources management and to assess the effect of human resources management on performance of construction firms respectively. The study found that the internal factors affecting human resources management are volume of work, firm size, communication, lack of training and development and others while the external factors trade union, economy, politics, government legislature, etc. The regression analysis indicates that some human resources management practices are positively significant at 5% level while training and development and are negatively significant. The study concluded that, the negative values have not been attracting attention of the managers. The study recommends that there should be adequate training and development programmes and motivation to quicken the workers.
