Abstract

The study assessed the leverage of staff development on teachers’ job effectiveness in FCT secondary schools. The research design used for this study was the cross-sectional survey research design. The population of the study consisted of 3,478 (3418 teachers and 60 principals). The sample size of this study consisted of 323 (310 teachers and 13 principals) drawn from 13 senior secondary schools in four Area Councils in FCT, Abuja. The researchers developed a questionnaire for data collection from the respondents. The questionnaire is tagged ‘Teachers Questionnaire on Leverage of Staff Development on Teachers’ Job Effectiveness’ (TQLSDTJE). The instrument was duly validated and it yielded 0.79 as logical validity index. The instrument was pilot tested and the coefficient of internal consistency of 0.79 was obtained. Descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Chi-square statistical was employed to test all the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of hypothesis one indicated that there was a significant leverage between participation in in-service training and teachers’ job effectiveness in FCT Senior Secondary Schools, Nigeria and there was a significant leverage between mentoring and teachers’ job effectiveness in FCT Senior Secondary Schools, Nigeria. One of the recommendations of the study was that the FCT Secondary Education Board needs to sponsor all teachers through in-service training such as sandwich; part-time programmes among others to enable them update their knowledge and teaching skills needed for effective performance of their teaching responsibilities.
