Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to review the causes and implications of gender disparities in youth skill acquisition and employment outcomes in Nigeria. Gender disparities in youth skill acquisition and employment outcomes remain a critical challenge in Nigeria, limiting the nation’s socio-economic growth and undermining sustainable development. Despite various initiatives aimed at promoting equality, structural barriers continue to restrict women’s participation in skill development and access to decent employment opportunities. This paper examined the underlying causes of gender disparities in Nigeria’s labor market, including cultural norms, educational inequalities, workplace discrimination, limited access to resources, and socio-economic constraints. It further examines the impact of these disparities on national productivity, unemployment rates, and the perpetuation of poverty. Drawing on recent empirical studies, the paper identifies strategic solutions such as policy reforms, gender-sensitive skill acquisition programs, improved access to finance, mentorship opportunities, and public awareness campaigns. The findings highlight the need for a holistic approach that integrates government, private sector, and community efforts to bridge the gender gap. Conclusively, the paper emphasizes that addressing gender disparities in skill acquisition and employment outcomes is not only a matter of social justice but also a critical driver of inclusive economic growth in Nigeria.
